Today is my first post of the year here at The Hen's Den and the start of my second year as part of the Design Team. I was so happy that Charlie asked me back for a second term. Not only are these ladies amazingly creative but really cool to be on a team with. Fun, Fun, Fun and supportive too.

 January's Kit is All is Bright by My Mind's Eye. How appropriate coming off of  the Christmas holiday. I don't know about you but I have a ton of photos to scrap. 

This is what I received in my kit for the month.

These paper's inspired me to scrap about a Christmas tradition here at the Kramer's house. We love to bake. My boys have grown up so now it's just me and the girl's continuing on with the traditions. Jolie especially loves putting together the gingerbread house kit I buy every year. It seems like every weekend we are baking something from putting together the gingerbread house, to baking cookies and making chocolate candy molds. What can I say we love our sweets.

A few of the techniques I used in this layout are layering, distressing with scissors and distressing with inks as well. I layered the May Arts ribbons in with the papers behind the photos. I also cut the individual rosettes from the May Arts Trim. How cute is that piece of decorative tape in the corner of the gingerbread house photo?

Below is a close of up a pretty poinsettia that I die cut using my new Tim Holtz die. I love how the chipboard tags elements ties into the whole design of my layout.

I used the Joy chipboard elements for the title. That individual rosette was perfect to make holly with.

I had so much fun working with this collection.

The packages have been opened, the goodies eaten, and you are thinking about the blessings you enjoyed earlier this week.  Don’t forget to send your thanks!  No worries, I’m here to the rescue with this quick, easy, and elegant card. (Even better- this card uses up some Christmas paper scraps!)

Supplies:

Paper- All is Bright 6x6 paper pad (My Minds Eye)

Card base- Juniper (Memory Box)

Sentiment- Signature Christmas (Papertrey Ink)

Ink- Tuxedo Black (Memento)

Buttons- All is Bright Decorative Buttons (My Minds Eye)

Bling- All is Bright Faceted Gems (My Minds Eye)

Adhesive- ZipDry

Assembling your page/card/project:

1.    Trim chevron paper along pattern.  (Helpful hint-You’ll want to play around with two pieces to create two solid “juniper” stripes large enough for stamping the sentiment).

2.    Adhere the chevron papers and trim excess edging from card base.

3.    Stamp sentiment to the void left on juniper card base with Memento Ink.

4.    Adhere buttons and bling along dark cream chevron stripe.

5.    Write a note of the thanks for that awesome gift and mail out to that uber deserving gift giver. :)

6x6 Be Merry Card by Anita Mulcahey using My Minds Eye

I love this paper line by My Mind's Eye, All is Bright.  The papers are stunning and the embellishments are so much fun.  I knew that I wanted to do a fire place with a Christmas tree beside it.  I freehand cut the tree and the fireplace.  The card is huge as a result 6X6" and will need a special envelope but it is for a special person so it is worth it.  I am very happy with how it came out.  Be sure to go to The Hens' Den store to check out all these wonderful goodies.

Supplies:

1.  My Mind's Eye All is Bright 6X6" paper pad

2.  My Mind's Eye All is Bright Decorative Buttons, Twine and Rhinestones

3.  Tim Holtz Barn Door Distress Ink

Cutting Directions:

1.  Cut cream card stock 6 X 12" and fold in half.  Ink edges.

2.  Cut tan chevron paper into a 5 1/2" square.

3.  Cut a Christmas tree and fire place.

4.  Trim around doily shape with the word merry from your paper pad.

Assembly Instructions:

1.  Tape a piece of red twine to the back of your tree near the top and start threading buttons and chipboard  pieces down the length of your tree.  Repeat with the green twine.  Place a large jewel at the top of the tree.

2.  Add adhesive to the trunk of the tree and use the brown twine to make your trunk.  I run mine over the edge and then neatly trim with sharp scissors.

3.  Adhere tan chevron paper to center of card base.

4.  Add fireplace to the bottom right so that it lines up with the bottom of the chevron paper.

5.  Add your doily/merry cut out piece over to the right edge of the fire place so that you can see the word merry.

6.  Add your Christmas tree to the left side of your card with the larger bottom part just to the edge of the card base.  I popped my tree up.

7.  Thread two buttons and one chipboard button with twine and adhere to top left corner.

Featuring My Minds Eye "All Is Bright" Collection

This month I thought I would share with you my LOVE for ALL THINGS CHRISTMAS. 

I Started out with the fun filler pages from the Hens Den Chic album dictionary pages. Then I stated layering using pages from the 6x6 paper pad from My Minds Eye "All is Bright" collection. I had a few stickers left over from a previous project and used them too. And how I LOVE the WASHI TAPE - SWOON!!

Using my cup template I cut out my base papers then just started cutting bits and pieces from a couple of the 6x6 paper pad and layering them as I went. I Love how it all came together. 

Using scraps I created lots of banners and I included the "all is bright" label from the bottom of one of the larger pieces that I had laying around.

I love this little banner! The 6x6 papers are perfect for projects like this one!

I just have to tell you how much I love Charlie and Cheri and how much they do for us Hens' Den ladies. I was so happy when Charlie sent me my package of My Mind's Eye All is Bright papers and embellishments to work with this month.

Supplies:

Patterned Paper:  My Mind's Eye, All is Bright

Twine:  My Mind's Eye, All is Bright 30 yards twine

Stickers:  My Mind's Eye, All is Bright, Layered Stickers

Staples:  Ranger Tiny Attacher

Acrylic Paper

Dies

Foil Paper:  Ranger

Cuttlebug Embossing Folder

Fiskars 1/8" hole punch

Cutting Directions:

1.  Cut green cardstock 4 1/4 X 5 1/2"

2.  Cut red chevron paper 4 X 5 1/4"

3.  Cut White notebook paper 3 X 4 1/4" 

3.  Cut a strip of acetate to fit banner die.

4.  Die cut three different sizes of ornaments using plain cardstock for the larger one.

5.  Cut the larger ornament out of the silver paper as well.

6.  Die cut fancy border for the top edge of your card.

Assembly Directions:

1.  Take the silver ornament and cut just below the bottom of the top part of the ornament.  This paper is sticky backed so stick it to your ornament.

2.  Add adhesive to cover the rest of the ornament and lay your twine in rows alternating color as desired.

3.  I usually leave extra over hanging the edge and then trim around it from behind with my best scissors.

4.  Die cut your banner from the acetate and then run through your Cuttlebug embossing folder.

5.  Punch holes in all three ornaments and string with twine.

6.  Layer the red chevron paper over the green cardstock and glue down.  

7.  Glue down the white notebook paper 3/4" down from the top of the card and 1" in from the left edge.

8. Cut acetate banner 4" long and adhere a little bit below the white notebook paper and 1/2" in from the left.

9.  Cut fancy border strip 4 X 5 1/4" and adhere across the notebook paper and over top of the acetate.  Staple into place.

10.  Adhere the smallest ornament under the corner of the acetate in the left corner of the chevron paper.

11.  Adhere the medium sized ornament just near the top of the fancy border.

12.  Adhere twine ornament on an angle under the medium ornament.

13.  Place Merry Christmas sticker lining up to the right edge of the card and at the bottom of the chevron paper.

Tuesday Spotlight! Cheri has made another great mini (Christmas) using My Minds Eye "all is bright" collection & Graphic 45

I think I have an issue... I have now made 5 Christmas books, all different, and I LOVE them all!! And they are all for different purposes. I think I might be running out of display room in my house come this Christmas. 

1. Start out using the 8 x 8 Matchbook box from Graphic 45

2. Cut the top off of the box that has the window. Gently score the inside left side, do not go all the way thru, you are just creating a "flap".

3. Cut off the left side of the "inside" box.

4. Wrap the outside of your box and window: 

Glue the inside of the box to the outside of the box first with the opening on the left facing the flap side (both should be on the left.)

Then wrap the bottom and sides. This is the template that I used, but you can wrap each side individually if you want. (The red dots are the opposite of this paper.) Once I was done wrapping my box I added the matching Washi tape to it as your sides using the template above do not reach to the very edge. 

Then add paper to the outside of the "window" part of the box.

At this point all of your outside pieces should have paper on them. Don't add paper just yet to the inside of your box.

For added fun I painted all of my edges at this point, this is totally optional, I just happen to love to paint everything (ask my husband, he'll tell ya! lol!!)

5. Punch a hole on the right side of your box about 1/4 from the lip. If you have a grommet or ring or even a paper reinforcer to use around the hole then go for it, if not it's all good! Now cut off about 18 inches or so of the red and white twine and fold in half. Tape the string in the middle of the box and up the side then pull your folded side through the hole you punched. This keeps the string really sturdy since you will also be covering it with paper when all is said and done.

For the "knob" on the front - add three pop dots to the post of your brad of choice. Line up where the ribbon will wrap around your brad, pierce a hole for your brad. Insert your brad - because you added pop dots to your brad it won't go all of the way in. This "wiggle room" will allow for the string to wrap around it. Glue and bend the back side of the brad.

6. Grab some chocolate, it will take you to your happy place. Let's add some hinges! I like to line up my hinges then mark the holes with a pencil then make the holes with a piercer.  Now, you may notice that your brads may seem a little short but they aren't, give them a little glue and bend them back as best as you can, then go get your hammer and hammer them, voila - those baby's aren't going anywhere! I like to hammer the fronts too, I like the texture. :)

At this point go ahead and decorate your spine before you get to #7.

NOW you can add paper to the inside of your box, the inside of the spine and the back of the window. You will see you had to wait to do this until all of your hardware is on so you can cover up the brads from the hinges, knob and the string for your closure.

7. Take a piece of scratch paper and cut it to the length of your book and fold it in half. Punch holes using a binding system or hole punch. This will create your template where you will put your holes on your book spine. Trace your holes from your template and punch them using a punch or hole setter. Cut your wires to length, then insert them into the punched holes from right to left. For a step by step photograph tutorial on how to do the binding check out my blog here: Binding tutorial

8. What your spine is going to look like with the rings and hinges.

So... Your inside pages! FUN TIME...
I used the matching 6 x 6 paper pad. There is a little strip up at the top with a hole. You COULD and most people do cut that off so you have a true 6x6 piece of paper, but hey, this isn't a card, it's a mini book. I like to just go for it so instead of spending time cutting the tops off, I covered them in WASHI tape! Super cute, plus my pages are 1/2 taller now, BONUS!!

I love how these pages are pretty much decorated just add embellishments, brads, bling, layered stickers, chipboard pieces & buttons. Once you are done punch your holes in your pages.

Slide all of your papers in then you will need to pinch the wires together with your fingers. 

I hope this inspires you to create something outside of the box! HA!  This album will be at the Creating Keepsakes Expo in Bellevue this coming weekend, look for The Hens Den booth!!
